Construction Site Safety Specialist (CSSS) Program

What is the CSSS Program? The Construction Site Safety Specialist (CSSS) certificate program provides the foundational knowledge and skills needed for a construction site safety professional.

Members who complete the CSSS certificate will be eligible to take the Safety Trained Supervisor Construction (STSC) and the Construction Health and Safety Technician (CHST) workshop/exam if they choose to further their safety leadership skills and become certified.

How do I obtain the initial CSSS certificate? To obtain the CSSS certificate, members must have the following requirements:

1. A UBC member in good standing

2. A journey level member with a minimum of five years of construction experience

3. Members must have successfully completed the following CITF or TTT classes below:

The Safety Trained Supervisor Construction (STSC) and the Construction Health and Safety Technician (CHST) are certifications offered by the Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP). The BCSP offers the most recognized industry credentials in the safety and health profession.

What is the next step once I have all the requirements?

Once you have completed all prerequisites, the Construction Site Safety Specialist (CITF) certificate title will automatically be added to your training history. Congrats! This is your first step in becoming a safety professional in the Construction Industry.

Please contact your Home Training Center if you wish to pursue the Safety Trained Supervisor Construction (STSC) and the Construction Health and Safety Technician (CHST) certifications. Your home training center will verify you have met all prerequisites and ensure you are ready to attend the Safety Trained Supervisor Construction (STSC) 5-day workshop at the ITC in Las Vegas.

What is the process once I contact my training center?
  • Your training center will verify you have met all prerequisites and inform you the next available dates for the STSC workshop.
  • Once you choose a date, your training center will send you the necessary forms so you can be registered into the Safety Trained Supervisor Construction (STSC) certification 5-day workshop at the ITC in Las Vegas. BCSP will be delivering the proctored exam on the last day of the workshop.
  • Your training center will also give you information on creating an online profile with the Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP) to be able to take the STSC exam.
  • Once you create a profile, you must complete the BCSP application to sit for the exam prior to attending the STSC exam prep workshop. *Applications must be received by the BCSP 31 days before the class start date.

Once you successfully complete and pass the STSC exam, you will be eligible to attend the Construction Health and Safety Technician (CHST) Exam Prep Workshop and become eligible to take the CHST exam. Please contact your home training center for registration.

In what order should these certifications be completed?

Members should complete the certificates/certifications in the order listed below. All eligibility requirements must be met before moving on to the next certification. Certs 1-3 are recommended for UBC members, certifications 4 and 5 are more advanced and require college degrees.
